Basic Chemistry Online lab materials

You may already have many of these items in your household. They are common household items that can be picked up at grocery, hardware, or discount stores in your area. Most have a long shelf life and leftover material can be used for every day household cleaning and cooking. Students are welcome to share the use of the materials (but not the actual lab work) with fellow students.

Household Cleaning Supplies

• Rubbing alcohol
• Muriatic acid (The Works found at Dillons and other stores is recommended)
• Lye (i.e., Red Devil drain cleaner) The key ingredient is sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide
• Alka Seltzer or generic brand
• Epsom salts
• Hydrogen peroxide
• Washing soda
• Ammonia solution (i.e., Mr. Clean)
• Trisodium phosphate (TSP) usually found with the paint supplies at a hardware store
• 9 volt battery
• Candle
• Butane lighter 

Miscellaneaous Materials

• Table salt
• Sugar
• White vinegar
• Baking soda
• 30 g aluminum foil, copper or lead
