Drug & Alcohol Prevention

  • The Vice President of Student Service and/or his/her designees supervise the process of alcohol and drug-related sanctions
  • Butler Community College offers drug and alcohol-free events and opportunities for campus involvement
  • Various locations on campus offer extended hours of operation with drug and alcohol-free settings for recreation
  • Nonalcoholic beverages are promoted at events
  • Substance-free living options are available through on-campus housing
  • Butler students pledge through the Honor Code to exercise integrity and responsibility
  • Through on-campus programs, students are educated about the risks of drug and alcohol use
  • Student leaders aid in prevention through program planning and policy enforcement (Resident Assistants, Student Government Association, and other student organizations)
  • Butler is committed to maintaining a drug and alcohol free workplace in compliance with the Drug Free Schools and Communities Act Amendments of 1989

Drug & Alcohol Counseling Treatment

  • Butler Community College offers free counseling to students, faculty, and staff.
  • Appointments can be made with Nancy Hamm, 316.322.3162
  • Butler offers CHOICES (Cultivating Healthy Opportunities In College Environments) and all students are sanctioned with the CHOICES course for drug and alcohol violations
  • Butler employees may be required to complete a drug or alcohol abuse assistance or rehabilitation program as a result of violation of College policy

Health Risks Associated with Drug & Alcohol Use

  • 1,700 college students between the ages of 18 and 24 die each year from alcohol-related injuries
  • About 25% of college students report academic consequences of their drinking
  • 31% of college students report symptoms of alcohol abuse
  • Approximately 110,000 students between the ages of 18 and 24 are arrested every year for an alcohol-related violation
  • Each year, 97,000 college students are victims of alcohol-related date rape or sexual abuse
  • 9 out of 10 students who use marijuana participate in other high-risk activities such as heavy drinking or cigarette smoking
  • Marijuana is associated with poor academic performance, isolation, participation in criminal acts, and a weakened immune system
