Mayor Jeff Longwell and Ray Frederick, president of the Wichita Independent Business Association (WIBA) presented a check for $10,000 in scholarship money to Butler Community College’s Stacy Cofer, Vice President of Advancement. This scholarship money will be distributed to 10 students who are either employed or interning with local businesses. To date, four students have been chosen for awards are interning or working for Koch-Glitsch, High Touch Technologies, Midnight Ryder Technologies and FlightSafety.
“We are so proud and pleased that WIBA can partner to assist with strengthening our community,” Frederick said. “This starts with each of us recognizing the mature talent already here in the area.”
Butler student Evan Miller, who has worked for Koch-Glitsch since February, and was present to receive the check, is one of the first to benefit from the WIBA gift. Other students will be awarded their $1,000 scholarships this academic year.
“Butler is in the unique position to bridge students with industry through internships that often lead to work opportunities,” Cofer said. “It’s our intention to give businesses the opportunity to “test drive” students and look forward to a great match. WIBA’s generosity is helping our students gain the work experience and be able to afford to take these wonderful community-based opportunities.”
Mayor Longwell applauded both WIBA and Butler for providing job momentum in the area.
“We certainly have momentum going with all of our initiatives to keep and attract talent to our city,” Mayor Longwell said.
